iML8986 Power Management IC for TFT LCD Panels
Candidate for:2025 World Electronics Achievement Awards - Power Management/Voltage Converter
The previous process design involved separating the PMIC and L/S (Level Shifter) into separate dies (dual die) due to the complexity of L/S operations ranging from negative voltage -20V to high voltage +40V. However, this dual die design resulted in higher costs and lower yield compared to the one-die solution. Integrating the PMIC and L/S into a single die (one-die solution) reduces packaging costs, improves production yield, reduces customer returns, and avoids process issues caused by a one of die's production capacity problems. The integration of the PMIC and L/S into a one-die solution represents a higher level of technology and is a future trend towards highly integrated one-die solutions.
The iML 8986 is a highly integrated power management IC for TFT LCD panels and customized for panel manufacturer AUO. It is positioned for mid-to-high-end MNT and TV applications. AUO, as a company specializing in display technology and electronic products, holds a leading position in LCD panels. The device consists of one current mode boost regulator for AVDD, 3 current mode buck regulators for DVDD1, DVDD2 and DVDD3. An inverting regulator for VGL, two negative linear regulators (VSSG_P, VSSQ_P), a boost regulator for VGH with temperature-compensated output, 3-channel programmable amplifiers and an internal voltage detector. Additionally, it incorporates a 12-channel level-shifter scan driver for driving TFT panels. AUO considers the power management IC as key part, and for the iML 8986, we offer superior static quiescent current consumption compared to competitors, better efficiency under maximum applied loads in MNT, lower temperature on the panel, and flexible and wide SR adjustments to help customers avoid system EMI interference on HC. The AVDD Vpp performance of the iML 8986 surpasses competitors in both BOOST and SEPIC modes. All these advantages are combined in our one-die solution, demonstrating strong competitiveness in terms of pricing. Therefore, the iML 8986 has a great opportunity to become the first key part PMIC for AUO in Chipone
